I thank God for this opportunity to present this paper at  this conference today, It is a privilege that is rare to come-by considering the caliber of people and experience in an area so well known to them. I thank God for making cashew, in my perspective, a twin of the palm tree for no other reason than its all round usefulness.

How true can this be? I will not belabour us on the value of cashew nut which is of economic importance at the world market, or the oil of the nut shell being utilized by many industries for production of lubrication oil etc.

The leaves have been found to be medicinal in the treatment of hypotension and bronchitis. It is also useful as natural toothpaste. The bark is known for its use as a contraceptive and  in the treatment of diarrhea, fluid retention, nerve and memory problems.(1)

I am delighted to be part of this unique occasion of the National Cashew Festival and awards as well as Annual Flag-Off to mark the beginning of 2016 Nigerian Cashew Trading Season. This is one of the initiatives of National Cashew Association of Nigeria (NCAN) to consolidate on the gains recorded so far in the cashew industry. I am indeed encouraged by the passion demonstrated by the stakeholders in cashew industry.

2.     Our presence here today is an indication that we are ready to embrace the change in the industrial sector through the Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP) as a key towards diversifying our economy for growth that will translate to the general well-being of our people. I am therefore delighted to be part of this remarkable gathering representing our resolve to redirect our economy from dependence

I am delighted to be here in your midst today to deliver the keynote address at this National Cashew Festival. Your decision to hold this festival is both appropriate in the choice of time and place. The timing is apt as Nigeria is currently passing through a period of economic transition, accompanied by dwindling fortunes from oil revenue. The choice of Ilorin is appropriate as it is situated in one of the agro-ecological zones notable for cashew production. With the global downturn in the oil economy, it is most fitting and proper for Nigeria to take a hard look at the non-oil economy and begin to unlock the latent potential in it. Thankfully, Nigeria is blessed with abundant non-oil resources, particularly in agriculture, and these have been playing a significant part in the economy of Nigeria in recent time.
